Suki grumbled, rubbing her eyes. It’d been days since the Kyoshi Warriors assigned her to this task: spending a week in the wilderness. She had done it plenty of times before, but this one was starting to get a bit.. worrisome. With the Fire Nation growing stronger by the day, Suki was starting to think that going out on her own was rather dangerous.
The warrior scrambled out of her tent, brushing off dirt and bugs from her rugged clothing. The thing about Suki is that she was used to these kinds of conditions, they didn’t bother her. She was perfectly fine getting down and dirty, and hated when people thought otherwise, just because she’s a girl.
Good morning, world, she thought wearily, standing up and stretching. Suki stared at the sunset, slipping on her shoes and walking towards the nearest pond to get some breakfast. Before she left, she grabbed a fishing pole, and a fresh little baggie of squirming worms. Just in case I can’t catch with my bare hands.
Toph was sitting on the forest floor, her back against the tree, enjoying the cool of the shade that the trees provided. She yawned and stretched, about to go find some food, when she felt someone approaching. She stood for a few seconds, trying to determine who it was, but it was unfamiliar. She hid behind a tree and, when she could pin point the exact location, hit the ground with her foot, sending a rock towards the approaching being.
With her quick, cat-like reflexes, Suki jumped up, avoiding the rock and landing on the ground with a soft thud. What on Earth?! she thought, walking towards the source in a calm, smooth way.
She was careful not to go too fast, because after all, it might have been an earth bender gone wrong, and working for the Fire Nation, even though those chances were slim. “Hello?” Suki called out, softly at first, but louder at the end. “Is anyone there?” She grabbed her small pocket knife from the pocket of her jeans.
Toph shuffled silently around the tree, feeling the location of the woman (Which she now knew because of her voice) just a few yards in front of her. She widened her stance and punched the ground, creating a rock perimeter around the woman. When she was sure she was secure, Toph asked, “Who are you? What do you want? Are you here to take me back to my parents? I won’t go.”
Realizing it was only a young girl, Suki relaxed a bit. But she knew not to trust too quickly, for it would most likely back fire on her. She knew what the Fire Nation did, and she didn’t trust it.
“I am Mano,” Suki said, not using her real name for the obvious: she was in a test of survival. “I’m not here to take you back to your parents, I don’t even know who you are. Might I ask though? What is your name?”
Toph moved closer, keeping tense so as to be ready for any kind of attack. She listened closely to the earth, listening for any sort of variation in the stranger. Her heart beat was already fast; from fear, obviously, but something changed when she said her name. “You’re lying,” she said bluntly. “Tell me your real name!” She tightened her fist and the rock wall around her became more enclosed.
